Where It All Begins
WE, THE PEOPLE
OF INDIA
On 26 November 1949, the people of India gave themselves this Constitution. It starts with a promise: a promise of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity for every single person.
Justice
Fair treatment for everyone, in society, the economy, and politics.
Liberty
Freedom to think, believe, express, and worship as you choose.
Equality
Equal status and opportunity for every person, no exceptions.
Fraternity
Brotherhood that gives every person dignity and keeps the nation united.
A Promise to Every Indian
The Constitution is the rulebook that 1.4 billion people agreed to follow. It says that no matter where you were born, what language you speak, or what your family believes, you have the same rights as every other person in this country.
It promises a republic, which means the people are in charge. Not a king, not a dictator, but you and your community, through the leaders you choose.
It promises a sovereign nation, free from any outside control. A secular nation where all religions are equal. A democratic nation where your vote matters. And a socialist nation where wealth is shared fairly.
